In conversation with the German head of state following the ceremony, Ambassador Linntam discussed the excellent relations between their two countries and opportunities for further cooperation, including in the fields of digitalisation and the fight against climate change.
Their discussion also focussed on Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and key issues in European security. Ambassador Linntam said that Estonia appreciates the scope of Germany’s support for Ukraine and stressed the need for unwavering, unified backing for the country in order to help it to victory. “It is vital for Russia to learn that aggression never pays,” she said, adding that Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration was important for the future.
During the discussion Ambassador Linntam also remarked that Estonia greatly values Germany’s contribution to Baltic air-policing, as well as the enhanced presence of allied forces in the Baltic States. Reinforcing NATO’s defence and deterrence posture is of key importance in guaranteeing European security.
Marika Linntam graduated from the University of Tartu with a degree in law. She has also taken a short course on EU law in Trier in Germany and defended a Master’s degree on this topic at the University of Rennes in France.
Linntam began working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2001. Since then she has served as an adviser on a number of foreign assignments at the Permanent Representation of Estonia to the EU, including during Estonia’s presidency in 2017, and in a number of positions connected to the EU within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the Legal Department, she headed up the European Court of Justice office from 2010-2012 and the EU Law office from 2012-2013, and also represented Estonia at the European Court of Justice from 2010-2013. For the five years prior to being appointed ambassador, she served as the director general of the Europe Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which covers such areas as Estonia’s bilateral relations with other European countries (including Germany) and general EU matters, among them the expansion of the union.
