The discussions focused on strengthening political and economic relations between Estonia and Azerbaijan, Russia’s war against Ukraine, progress in the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and the situation in the Middle East.
Undersecretary Roger emphasised that bilateral relations between Estonia and Azerbaijan have developed significantly in recent years. Cooperation has expanded particularly in the fields of education, culture, digital affairs and the economy. Estonia is actively seeking opportunities to broaden business cooperation and facilitate access for Estonian companies to Azerbaijani markets. An important step in bilateral relations is Estonia’s decision to open an embassy in the Azerbaijani capital and to post a resident ambassador to Baku this autumn.
The consultations also focused on relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union, which have likewise deepened. Azerbaijan is an important partner for the European Union, particularly in the fields of energy and connectivity.
Addressing Russia’s aggression, Roger noted that there are no signs that Russia wishes to move towards peace. The Kremlin has intensified its attacks on Ukrainian cities and civilians and continues to conduct hybrid activities and influence operations against Ukraine’s partners. The international community must continue to raise the cost of aggression and support Ukraine in order to achieve a just and lasting peace.
Discussing the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the Undersecretary welcomed the steps taken by both countries towards regional stability and the normalisation of relations. Estonia consistently supports the territorial integrity of both countries and hopes that the positive momentum in the peace process will continue.
