Foreign Ministry Upcoming Events: May 12-18, 2014

12.05 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will take part in the European Union foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels. The foreign ministers will discuss the latest events in Ukraine and the European Union’s next steps in this regard. The Foreign Affairs Council will also discuss the Middle East peace process and the state of negotiations between Israel and Palestine, as well as the European Neighbourhood Policy.

12-15.05 A plenary session of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) will be held in London. The Estonian delegation will be led by Ambassador Malle Talvet-Mustonen.

13.05 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will meet with U.S. Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland. The topic of discussion will be issues related to the security situation in Ukraine due to the crisis.

The meeting will be followed by a press conference.

14.05 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will speak at the general meeting of the Estonian-American Chamber of Commerce about the effects of the Ukraine conflict on business.

14.05 The Estonia-Flemish Cooperation Programme for 2015-2018 will be signed in Brussels.

15.05 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will speak at the opening of the annual conference of the European Museum Forum in Tallinn.

The annual conference of the European Museum Forum (EMF) and the European Museum of the Year awards gala (EMYA) will take place in Tallinn from May 14 -17. During the event the best museums in Europe will be introduced and the European Museum of the Year Award will be presented at the formal ceremony. The EMF has presented the award for best museum since 1977 and both new and renovated museums can be nominated. In 2008, KUMU, the Art Museum of Estonia received the honour of Museum of the Year. 16.05 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will take part in a reception as part of Great Britain’s Prince Harry's visit to Tallinn.

Cultural events abroad:

15.05 The Estonian and Georgian embassies in the Netherlands will present a screening of the feature film “Tangerines” at Leiden University. The film’s director Zaza Urushadze will participate in a discussion following the film.

15.05 A presentation of a catalogue of the works of Estonian-born metal artist Tiiu-Ene Vaivadiene will take place at the Estonian Embassy in Vilnius, Lithuania.

16.05 at 19:00 Jaan Toomik’s solo exhibition entitled “Messages From Reality” III will be opened at the renowned Berlin gallery  Werkstattgalerie. The exhibition’s curator is Harry Liivrand. In his first personal exhibition in Berlin, the artist is exhibiting nine paintings (from the years 2006 to 2014) and two videos. Some new, large-format figurative paintings were created especially for the exhibition.

Jaan Toomik is an internationally renowned and award-winning Estonian artist. He has participated in the Sao Paulo Biennale (1994), Manifesta 1 (1996), the Venice Biennale (1997, 2003), the fourth Berlin Biennale (2006) and won the Jury Prize at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival (2008). Toomik is currently working as a professor of painting at the Estonian Academy of Arts and is completing his first feature film. For more information: [email protected].

17-18.05 The Saaremaa Men’s Choir SÜM will take part in a Europe Festival near Paris, in Bois-le-Roi, which is focusing on the Baltic states this year.

There will be a number of performances during the two-day festival and a roundtable of Baltic Ambassadors will also take place. In the Estonia tent, the Estonian Embassy in France along with the France-Estonie Society will introduce the song festival tradition and tourism opportunities on Saaremaa, the second largest island in the Baltic Sea. 2014 is the Baltic Sea Year for Estonia. The European Commission helps fund the Bois-le-Roi festival.

As part of their concert-tour, the Saaremaa Men’s Choir SÜM will also perform in Luxembourg on May 15 at 19:30. They will be giving a joint concert with the Luxembourg Estonian women’s ensemble Meloodilised tordid (“The Melodious Tortes”).

This year the Saaremaa Men’s Choir SÜM was awarded the title of Choir of the Year by the Estonian Choral Association. The concerts will be led by SÜM conductors Mari Ausmees and Ester Soe. Additional information: [email protected]
