Yesterday, 6 April, the new premises of the Estonian Embassy in Cairo were formally inaugurated. The opening ceremony was attended by Estonia’s Ambassador to Egypt Ingrid Amer and Speaker of the Riigikogu Lauri Hussar. Diplomats from several countries, along with partners, entrepreneurs, local Estonians, and the chairman of the Egyptian parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, former foreign minister Sameh Shoukry, were also in attendance.

Estonia’s Ambassador to Egypt Ingrid Amer said that the new embassy premises provide excellent opportunities for hosting events and introducing Estonia to local partners.

“Embassies are Estonia’s calling cards abroad, and one of their roles is to reflect the nature, outlook and values of our country,” Ambassador Amer said. “I am pleased that, on the banks of the Nile and beneath the palm trees, the new premises of our embassy tell Estonia’s story through Nordic interior design, displayed art and colours from home.”

Estonia and Egypt established diplomatic relations on 2 January 1992. Over the past 34 years, cooperation between the two countries has intensified significantly, covering business, technology, trade, innovation and tourism. Egypt is also an important partner for NATO and the European Union, particularly in the areas of maritime security and migration. Estonia’s first embassy in Africa and the Arab world was opened in Cairo in March 2010.

In the coming years, there are plans to further deepen bilateral cooperation, focusing in particular on defence cooperation and economic relations. Estonia and Egypt are currently both members of the United Nations Human Rights Council, which creates additional opportunities for cooperation in promoting human rights.

The new premises of the Estonian Embassy are located at: 1 El-Saleh Ayoub St, 7th floor, 11211 Zamalek, Cairo.
