Today marks 18 years since Russia launched its war against Georgia, as a result of which Russia continues to occupy 20% of Georgian territory. It was a warning to the whole of Europe, and Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine confirms that it was not an isolated incident but part of a consistent pattern of behaviour. Estonia stood with the people of Georgia then, and it stands with them today.
Violations of international law and the use of force to change internationally recognised borders must never become normalised. That is why we remain committed to upholding international law, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, and to supporting those who are fighting for their freedom.
