Today, on 2 June, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna met in Tallinn with Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko at a dinner hosted by the Estonian Prime Minister. Their discussion focused on Ukraine’s security, the enlargement of the European Union, and the need to increase pressure on Russia.

“Ukraine is fighting not only for its own sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, but also for the security of all Europe,” Tsahkna emphasized. “Last night’s latest brutal missile and drone attack by Russia on Ukrainian cities — which killed at least 18 people and injured more than a hundred — confirms that the Kremlin has not changed its goals and is not interested in peace. It is our duty to stand by Ukraine, continue isolating and pressuring Russia internationally, and provide Ukraine with comprehensive assistance — from military and humanitarian support to contributing to its reconstruction.”

According to Tsahkna, rebuilding Ukraine is a central priority of Estonia’s development cooperation. “A strong and democratic Ukraine is one of the keys to lasting peace,” he noted. “This is why Estonia will host an international Ukraine Recovery Conference in 2027 to promote a comprehensive and effective reconstruction process in Ukraine.”

The meeting also addressed Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. The Foreign Minister stressed that, to strengthen the security of both Ukraine and all of Europe, it is important to open the necessary EU accession clusters as quickly as possible.

“Despite Russia’s aggression, Ukraine has made significant progress in implementing reforms,” Tsahkna said. “Ukraine’s accession to the European Union is not only in Europe’s security interests but also an opportunity for all of Europe to learn from Ukraine’s valuable experience in defending its state. Ukraine’s resilience and innovation serve as an example for all member states.”
