Reinsalu assured his Moldovan counterpart that Estonia supported Moldova’s integration as a EU candidate country, and was ready to offer every support to the country as it implements reforms. “Moldova’s future is in the European Union. They have demonstrated their commitment on their European path and they have supported Ukraine, the target of Russia’s full-scale war for almost a year now. The decision to grant candidate status to Moldova and Ukraine is a historic step that helps reinforce all of Europe, our democracy and freedom,” the foreign minister said.
Reinsalu said that in addition to reforms, it is important for Moldova to continue its close integration with the internal market of the EU and participate in EU programmes. “Through EU instruments, Estonia and Moldova enjoy excellent cooperation on developing e-governance, and we can share our expertise and experience more broadly to help reinforce Moldova’s digital and cyber domain,” he noted.
The foreign ministers also discussed continued support to Ukraine, and security in Europe. “Our goal is to help Ukraine win this war as soon as possible and on Ukraine’s terms only. The West must increase its military, economic and political assistance and ensure that Russia is held accountable for all the crimes it has committed in Ukraine,” Reinsalu said.
He added that at the same time, the focus must be kept on the whole region directly affected by the war, and work must continue on reinforcing our security. “Estonia helps ensure Moldova’s security through the European Peace Facility and we will continue all efforts to mitigate the inflation and energy crisis caused by Russia’s war,” Reinsalu said.
