At a meeting following the presentation of credentials, Ambassador Urb and President Tasoulas reaffirmed the good relations between Estonia and Greece, most recently demonstrated by President Alar Karis’s visit to Greece in April. They also discussed security threats facing Europe, the contribution of Estonia and Greece to collective defence, and opportunities to deepen bilateral defence industry cooperation. Ambassador Urb invited Greece to participate in the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Tallinn in January 2027.
“Estonia and Greece enjoy good and close relations, but there are still many opportunities to develop them further. As Ambassador, I want to bring people and businesses together and give impetus to new joint initiatives,” Urb said.
Piret Urb has extensive diplomatic experience, having served in the Estonian foreign service for more than 20 years. She has represented Estonia at the UN Human Rights Council and led the Freedom Online Coalition during Estonia’s first chairmanship in 2013–2014, which culminated in the adoption of the Tallinn Agenda. For five years, Piret Urb served as Head of International Relations at the Estonian Information System Authority (RIA), which manages the core infrastructure of Estonia’s digital state and is responsible for national cybersecurity. As Special Envoy for Connectivity from 2023 to 2024, she was, among other responsibilities, in charge of the substantive preparations for the Tallinn Digital Summit, a high-level international conference hosted by the Prime Minister. In 2025, Piret Urb worked in Geneva, coordinating the work of the Group of Central European and Baltic States at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Ambassador Piret Urb has also undertaken further studies in the United States and France.
Diplomatic relations between Estonia and Greece were restored on 2 October 1991. The Estonian Embassy in Athens began operating in April 1997.
