“With the support allocated today, Estonia reaffirms its continued commitment to alleviating international humanitarian crises and strengthening international cooperation. In doing so, we also contribute to the stability and security of Europe, on which the well-being and security of the people of Estonia also depend,” Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will allocate €50,000 to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund to support the protection and resilience of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure ahead of the coming winter. To date, Estonia has allocated a total of nearly €2.75 million to the fund from the resources of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Climate. In addition, €50,000 will be provided to the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund (UHF), managed by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), which helps international and local civil society organisations provide humanitarian assistance to people in Ukraine during the winter period. The assistance will be provided based on the most urgent needs, with particular attention paid to vulnerable groups, including women, children and people with disabilities.
“Ukrainians are preparing for a winter that could be the most difficult yet. Russia continues its deliberate attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, seeking to destroy the country’s energy capacity and break the resilience of its people,” said Tsahkna. “Putin’s aim is to deprive Ukrainians of water, electricity and heating. This must not succeed. We must do everything in our power to strengthen the resilience of Ukraine’s energy system, protect critical infrastructure, ensure that necessary supplies are available and make sure that vital assistance reaches those who need it most as quickly as possible.”
In addition to Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to allocate €70,000 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to support the organisation’s activities in 2027. Estonia’s contribution will help ensure that Palestine refugees have access to essential services, including social assistance, education and healthcare.
A further €20,000 will be allocated to the World Health Organization’s Contingency Fund for Emergencies (WHO CFE) and €40,000 to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to support the organisations’ activities in 2027.
