On Thursday, 10 September, Ambassador at Large for the Diaspora Marti Mätas and Estonian Ambassador to Sweden Margus Laidre attended a ceremony on the Swedish island of Gotland to mark the appointment of Estonia’s new Honorary Consul, Marion Norrby. The outgoing Honorary Consul, Riina Noodapera, was also thanked for her many years of service.

“I was pleased to welcome Marion Norrby as Estonia’s new Honorary Consul in Gotland. Honorary Consuls play an important role in raising Estonia’s profile, maintaining contacts and strengthening ties between Estonia and the regions in which they serve. Marion Norrby’s experience and knowledge provide an excellent foundation for this work,” Marti Mätas said.

“I would also like to thank Riina Noodapera for her dedicated work. Her contribution to representing Estonia’s interests and maintaining ties between Estonia and Gotland has been extremely valuable. I sincerely thank her for everything she has done and wish her every success for the future,” Mätas added.

Marion Norrby said it was an honour to take up her role as Estonia’s Honorary Consul in Gotland and represent Estonia’s interests. “It was a great honour to take on the duties of Estonia’s Honorary Consul in Gotland. Estonia and Gotland have many points of connection, and in my new role I want to help strengthen ties between our people, businesses and organisations. I also consider it important to provide support to Estonian citizens living on or visiting the island,” Norrby said.

Norrby said she also wanted to use the reception to introduce the people of Gotland to Estonian flavours and culture. “Every opportunity to tell Estonia’s story and introduce our country is valuable,” she added.

At the reception marking the appointment of the new Honorary Consul, Karl Krupp, Jasper Jürisson and Johannes Hõimoja from the Estonian Chefs Association helped introduce guests to Estonian cuisine. Fashion designers Kirill Safonov and Liina Stein presented Estonian fashion to the people of Gotland. Guests also had the opportunity to visit an exhibition of glass art by Kati Kerstna.

During the visit, Mätas and Laidre also met Governor of Gotland County Charlotte Petri Gornitzka and visited the Gotland Regiment P18.
