History of diplomatic relations
Greece recognised the Republic of Estonia on 19 May 1922. In the same year, Aleksander Hellat, who resided in Warsaw, was appointed Estonia’s envoy to Greece. He held the post for only a few months, as he was recalled to Estonia in November to become Minister of Foreign Affairs.
From 1929 to 1940, Estonia’s Honorary Consul in Athens was Augustin Constantin Papadatos, and from 1928 to 1940, its Vice Honorary Consul in Piraeus was Spiridon A. Georgandas. Greece had accredited to Estonia its ambassador residing in Warsaw, Kimon A. Kollas. Greece’s Honorary Consul General in Estonia until 1929 was Jüri Parik, followed by Oskar Kerson until 1940.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were restored on 2 October 1991. The Estonian Embassy in Athens began operating in April 1997. In February 2005, Greece opened its embassy in Tallinn.

Trade between Estonia and Greece has grown in recent years, but remains relatively modest. There is potential for developing economic relations in maritime transport and transit, ports and shipbuilding, digital and high technology, forestry, including wood products, and agricultural products. There is also interest in cooperation in tourism.
Estonian companies have invested in Greece mainly in financial and insurance activities, real estate, wholesale and retail trade, and accommodation and food service activities. Greek investments in Estonia have mainly been made in professional, scientific and technical activities, and in information and communication.

Cultural cooperation between Estonia and Greece is active and diverse. The Estonian Embassy in Athens has supported the visibility of Estonian culture in Greece, including by organising an Estonian stand at the Thessaloniki International Book Fair in May 2025 to mark the Year of the Estonian Book. Joonas Sildre took part in the fair, the exhibition 25 Most Beautiful Books was displayed, and contacts were established with Greek publishers and semioticians.
In the field of music, Estonian artists regularly take part in Athens Jazz, the largest jazz festival in Greece. In 2025, pianist Kirke Karja performed at the festival. Estonian conductors and ensembles have also been represented at other major music events. For example, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, conducted by Tõnu Kaljuste, took part in the European Polyphony festival in Rhodes.
On 7 November 2025, Anu Tali conducted the Athens State Orchestra at the Megaron Athens Concert Hall. On 7 March 2026, Paavo Järvi conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and a concert by Paavo Järvi and the Estonian Festival Orchestra has been announced for 20 July 2026.
Choirs from Estonia also take part in various choir competitions in Greece, including the Tartu Youth Choir, the ETV Children’s Choir and the Mixed Choir of Estonian Public Broadcasting. On 13 May 2026, the mixed choir Flora will take part in the Athens City Festival.
Where possible, the embassy also supports AnimaSyros, Greece’s largest animation film festival. In 2025, Kerdi Kuusk-Oengo from Nukufilm took part in the festival; in previous years, participants have included Priit Pärn, Olga Pärn, Janno Põldma, Ülo Pikkov and others.
