Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that Estonia welcomes Croatia’s accession to the European Union. “Today in Brussels Croatia signed an accession agreement with the European Union and as of 1 July 2013 Croatia should be the 28th member state of the European Union,” he said.

Paet also noted that the signing of an accession agreement with Croatia demonstrates the vitality of the European Union’s enlargement policy and serves as confirmation to other Western Balkan countries that consistently carrying out reforms is the proper path to EU accession.

The foreign minister added that Estonia continues to be a firm supporter of European Union enlargement. “Estonia supports giving Serbia European Union candidate country status, starting accession negotiations with Montenegro, continuing accession negotiations with Iceland and Turkey, and also beginning accession negotiations with Macedonia*. We also feel that steps must be taken to bring Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo closer to the European Union,” said Paet.
