Foreign Minister Sven Mikser affirmed at meetings with the leaders of Kosovo in Priština that the stability of Western Balkans and Kosovo’s integration into the EU is important for the EU. The Minister met with President Hashim Thaçi, Prime Minister Isa Mustafa, Foreign Minister Enver Hoxhaj, Minister of European Integration Mimoza Ahmetaj and President of the Parliament Kadri Veseli.

According to Sven Mikser, the Western Balkan region is of strategic importance for EU future, especially regarding European security and stability. “We support the efforts of Kosovo and all other Western Balkan countries to join the EU and I reaffirm that the door of the EU will remain open,” the Foreign Minister said in Priština. “Estonia also supports Kosovo’s efforts to achieve visa liberalisation with the EU, but progress depends mostly on Kosovo and the fulfilment of the conditions laid down for it,” the Minister added.

“We hope that the parliamentary elections on 11 June proceed in a democratic way and the government elected will be committed to fulfilling the remaining conditions for visa liberalisation. Citizens’ support for the EU has remained high in Kosovo for many years and we cannot underestimate the expectations of the citizens of a country with the youngest population in Europe to travel to Europe freely,” Mikser explained. The importance of good neighbourly relations in the Western Balkan region and the need to continue dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia were emphasised at every meeting.

Foreign Minister Mikser affirmed at the meetings that relations between Estonia and Kosovo are very good. Estonia has supported the development of internal security system and is ready to offer assistance in the fields of e-governance, education and healthcare.

The visit was of historical significance for Estonia as it was the first time the Estonian Foreign Minister had visited Kosovo since it declared independence on 17 February 2008.
