Foreign Ministers of Estonia and Romania open embassy in Tallinn

Today, Foreign Minister Sven Mikser and the Foreign Minister of Romania Teodor Meleșcanu opened the Romanian Embassy in Tallinn. During a meeting preceding the opening, ministers affirmed good relations between the two countries and expressed support for cooperation in NATO and the EU.
                                                                          
“Estonia and Romania have similar views on challenges ahead. We have common positions on many issues, especially on the European security and cooperation in NATO and the EU,” Foreign Minister Sven Mikser said. “Now, when Estonia has the Embassy in Bucharest and Romania in Tallinn, we can further strengthen our cooperation and defend our common values together.”

Mikser assured his Romanian counterpart that European security is one of the priorities of the Estonian Presidency of the EU Council. “Only by acting together and maintaining unity in foreign policy can the Union ensure the safety of its citizens and assume its role on the international stage,” said Mikser.

In addition, ministers expressed interest in developing cyber defence cooperation, where Estonia with its experiences and skills can be an important partner.

Other subjects discussed at the meeting included the Middle East peace process, the situation in Syria, the Eastern Partnership and Ukraine.
