Estonia allocates 150,000 euros to humanitarian aid in Ukraine

Foreign Ministry allocated 150,000 euros to three Estonian NGOs to alleviate the situation of internal refugees and victims of conflict in Ukraine. The allocation was equally divided between the NGOs Ukrainian Cultural Centre, Estonian Refugee Council and Mondo.

“Continuing warfare in eastern Ukraine that has resulted in more than 9800 deaths and 23,000 victims, is a great concern for us,” Foreign Minister Sven Mikser said. “As a state it is difficult to reach those in need, but here the NGOs play a crucial role in alleviating the situation in Ukraine,” the Minister added.

The Estonian Refugee Council continues to provide food aid and psycho-social support directly to groups of population in distress because of the conflict and to deliver medical supplies to hospitals. The Ukrainian Cultural Centre wishes to continue supporting the refugees and the wounded. The aid from Foreign Ministry will be used primarily for helping internally displaced persons, but if possible, also for supporting hospitals and orphanages in East Ukraine. NGO Mondo will in the following months continue to focus on internally displaced persons and people living next to the areas of conflict.

In addition to the given allocation, Foreign Ministry has given 400,000 euros in humanitarian aid to Ukraine this year. In 2016, Foreign Ministry gave 1.17 million euros in humanitarian aid to help victims of the conflict in Ukraine and alleviate the situation of the internally displaced persons.
