Tallinna Kaubamaja Gains Most in a Year on Dividend Proposal

AS Tallinna Kaubamaja (TKM1T) rose the most in 13 months in Tallinn trading following a proposal by Estonia’s largest listed retailer to pay an unchanged dividend of 35 euro cents to its shareholders.
The stock gained 24 euro cents, or as much as 4.1 percent, the biggest increase since February 2012. It traded 2.9 percent higher at 6.05 euros at 12:05 p.m. in Tallinn, implying a dividend yield of 5.8 percent.

Estonian Industrial Output Grew for 3rd Month on Electronics

Estonian industrial production rose for a third month in January, fueled by growing demand for the Baltic nation’s electronics and electricity exports.
Output rose 5.5 percent from a year earlier, compared with a revised 6 percent increase in December and a revised 1.2 percent gain in November, the Tallinn-based statistics office said today on its website. Production rose 0.3 percent from in the month on a seasonally adjusted basis.
“The increase in exports was mainly caused by the rapid growth in sales of electronic products,” the statistics office said. “Export sales of manufacturing production grew 14 percent in January compared to the same month of the previous year; domestic sales increased 6 percent.”

S&P Sees Lower Estonian Banking Risks as Deposit Funding Grows

Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services raised its risk ranking for Estonian banks, citing a lower reliance of the Baltic nation’s lenders on funding from their Nordic parents and a stable market environment.
Estonia’s ranking improved to group 5 from group 6 on a 1-10 scale where a lower score is better, S&P said in a Banking Industry Country Risk Assessment report, e-mailed to clients on Feb. 28. Group 5 includes countries such as China, Poland and Turkey, it said.

Estonia Industrial Output Expands In January

Estonia's industrial production expanded in January on a surge in manufacturing of electronic products, Statistics Estonia reported Tuesday.

Industrial production grew 5.5 percent from the prior year. Within overall output, manufacturing output was up 4.2 percent and energy production surged 17.2 percent. On the other hand, mining output dropped 3.4 percent.

A Medieval Monastery In Estonia

Estonia had an interesting time in the Middle Ages. Along with the other Baltic States of Lithuania and Latvia, they were the last bastion of paganism in a continent that had become entirely Christian.
Various Christian kingdoms decided this was a good excuse for conquest and launched the Northern Crusades. From 1208 to 1224, the Germans, Danes, and Swedes attacked Estonia and eventually conquered it.
/../ In 1343 the Estonians rose up against their occupiers and burned down Padise Monastery, killing 28 monks. The uprising was crushed and the Cistercians rebuilt the monastery better and stronger than before. It continued being a monastery until 1558, when it became a fortress protecting the landward approach to Tallinn. The building changed hands several times during the region's many wars. It was besieged twice, the siege in 1580 lasting 13 weeks, during which the defenders (Russians at that moment) got hammered with Swedish artillery and eventually were starved into submission. /../

He started running through snow up to his calves. I followed. The snow immediately trickled down the tops of my hiking boots, melted and gave my feet a cold bath. I kept running. At least I wasn't wearing regular shoes like Mart.

Eating And Drinking In Estonia

I always enjoy dipping into a new cuisine, so when I headed off to Estonia I was curious as to what kind of food I was going to get. Would it be like Russian cuisine? Scandinavian? A bit of both since the country is sandwiched between those two areas?
Turns out it's a mix with its own local twist. At least that was my impression. I was only in the country a week and so take all my observations with a dash of salt.
/../ The first thing I noticed is that bread comes with everything. The most distinct kind is a heavy black rye bread. Breakfasts include bread and an assortment of cold cuts and cheeses to fortify you against the cold day. Bread reappears for lunch and dinner and snacks. You'll see kids tromping down the street with a slice of black bread and butter for a snack. /../

The two gentlemen pictured above are Laurent Lamothe, prime minister of Haiti (left) and Toomas Ilves, president of Estonia (right).  I constantly know what both of these men are doing for their countries because they are actual, sincere users of social media. They do not employ “Twitter monkeys,” as the term in Washington now goes – they are interacting with the world directly via the Internet. As a result, I know more about the strategic direction of Haiti and Estonia than I do in Missouri, where I currently reside.

Emerging Europe airlines head for hangar

Just 13 months have passed since Malev went bankrupt, consigning the 66-year-old Hungarian flag carrier airline to history. Now the race is on to prevent the same fate befalling a bigger and even older name: Lot, the Polish national airline.

But Malev’s and Lot’s problems are mirrored at lossmaking airlines across “emerging” Europe: The Czech government has since November renewed efforts to sell Czech Airlines (CSA), with Korean Air Lines and Qatar Airways showing interest, but no guarantee of a deal; Latvia’s Air Baltic advertised a 50 per cent stake for sale in the Financial Times in August; Estonia’s government has said closing Estonian Air is an option; and Serbia has tried to tempt Abu Dhabi-based Etihad to buy Jat Airways.

In the EU’s “new” states, moreover, membership has been distinctly double-edged for airlines. Competition rules restrict governments’ ability to hand out state aid. A European Commission demand last year to pay back €332m of aid finally brought Malev crashing to earth. Brussels in December began probing aid to Air Baltic and Slovenia’s Adria Airways, and last month aid to Estonian Air – and must still approve aid to Lot.

Jürgen Ligi, its finance minister, does not need to make speeches blaming the eurozone for various national ills. He has been bold enough to make his own luck.
Estonia’s economy is smaller than Birmingham’s, so it can be written off as a curiosity. It is harder to dismiss Sweden, which is transforming itself from the most socialistic nation in the continent into a land of sun, snow and supply-side economics. /../

The head of UN Women, Michelle Bachelet, has indicated she would be prepared to compromise on the language used in the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) outcome document, as long as the words used "reflected the spirit" of the key issues and did not undermine past agreements.
She acknowledged that the issues of sexual and reproductive rights and health were of major importance in ending violence and in poverty alleviation and development, but remained sticking points for some conservative member states of the UN.

"Women must be included in mediation, but we still don't see them among the peace negotiators, due to tradition, culture, religion and [lack of] education. Many successful entrepreneurs through the ages have not had a university degree. Sir Alan Sugar made ginger beer as a teenager and sold it to friends, Peter Jones set up a tennis academy and Sir Richard Branson began by selling records.

With no business background, the motorcycle engineering graduate is one of a team of eight that won this year's Seedcamp award for the startup likely to have most impact. Their company, GateMe, provides software to streamline nightclub management and entry.

Electricity is a reluctant fuel in cold weather. Compared with summertime running, range drops by 25 per cent at minus 5, power delivery's stifled when batteries are cold, and interior heaters rob up to 60 per cent of charge. So it seemed like a good idea to see if our 2012 Green Car of the Year, the Vauxhall Ampera, was still the most viable EV option out by testing its sub-zero credentials.
Which is why we're currently in Estonia, a country enjoying uncharacteristically balmy winter temperatures of minus 14 degrees Celsius. And seeing as water and electricity make such a stimulating combination, we thought we'd take in some Baltic ice roads, which amount to six floating motorways between 4 and 10km long, allowing residents of the islands that pockmark Estonia's coast to travel to the mainland more quickly than ferries allow.

A new memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries will see an exchange of public officials and experts, with joint events also expected to be organised.
Government ministers have been pushing forward the idea of making transactions exclusively digital in the UK's digital by default agenda. This is intended to lead to services that are up to 50 times cheaper to run, compared to dealing with the public face to face, with phone calls also far more costly than online interactions.

Opetushallitus on huolissaan maahanmuuttajien valmistavasta koulutuksesta. Se ohjautuu Opetushallituksen tuoreen selvityksen mukaan paljolti väärille kohderyhmille. Yksikön päällikkö Sirkka- Liisa Kärki Opetushallituksesta katsoo, että vastoin koulutuksen tavoitteita, nuoret maahanmuuttajat eivät pääse koulutukseen. Oppilaitokset valitsevat jo kotimaassa koulutusta saaneita ja suomen kielen taitoisia aikuisia.

On pieni ihme, ettei tätä dokumenttielokuvaa ole tehty aikaisemmin kuin vasta nyt. Viru-hotelli kiehtoo, koska se on osa myös Suomen, Viron ja Venäjän (Neuvostoliiton) historiaa. Presidentti Urho Kekkosen Viron-matka vuonna 1964 sysäsi liikkeelle prosessin, jonka tuloksena suomalaiset rakennusliikkeet alkoivat rakentaa Tallinnaan Viru-hotellia vuonna 1972. Hotellista ja sen asiakkaista tuli monille neuvostojärjestelmässä eläneille virolaisille ensimmäinen kosketus länsimaihin.
