Today Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will be giving a speech in New York that introduces Estonia’s experiences using information technology and developing cyber security. During the conference, which will introduce states’ leadership experiences in various areas, presentations will also be given by several research experts from Harvard and Columbia universities, representatives from the international media outlets CNN, Economist, and Al Jazeera, and heads of state from the Netherlands, Mongolia, Georgia, the Caribbean Sea region, etc.
Following that, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will, together with his Latvian and Lithuanian colleagues, meet with US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg. In their meeting they will focus on relations between the USA and the Baltic states and also open the new Baltic-American Freedom Fund (BAFF). The foundation will start programmes that offer residents of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania opportunities to intern or study in the business, civil society or research sectors.
Foreign Minister Paet will also speak today during the foreign ministers’ meeting taking place within the framework of the UN General Assembly. He will address guaranteeing women’s rights and opportunities for self-realisation within the framework of fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals.
The foreign minister also has a meeting scheduled today with Foreign Minister of Yemen Abu Bakr al-Qirbi, with whom he will sign the protocol to establish diplomatic relations between Estonia and Yemen.
