VISIONS AND DIPLOMACY
14.05.2002
May, 21-22. 2002
PRESS CONFERENCE HALL
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Islandi väljak 1
Welcome to the lectures of foreign policy and presentation of the newest Estonian animated and documentary films.
Tunne Kelam - Deputy Chairman of Estonian Riigikogu (Parliament) will focus on questions concerning Estonia and European Union.
Harri Tiido - the Deputy Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will focus on the question of the choices of small nations in our Big World, discussing: why choose EU and NATO instead of staying neutral and totally independent? Could Estonia lose its identity in these structures? What are the alternatives to our current priorities?
2002 is the year we celebrate 90 years of Estonian cinema. Almost a century ago a flight of an aeroplane over the city of Tartu was documented on the film by an Estonian cameraman. First short feature followed two years later, founding a small, but persistent film culture.
Among all common genres and techniques, the animation has stood out with its distinct style and humour. In films of Priit Pärn, Janno Põldma and Priit Tender even the gravity often loses its strength. Physical as well as social rules become relative and the faiths of characters intertwine in an unexpected way. It is not surprising that those inventive films have gained reputation in many international festivals during more than 30 years.
On the other hand, documentaries bring us down to earth. Social problems, hidden aspects of everyday life and undiscovered history have captivated the attention of the documentary filmmakers during the last decade. Because of new emerging paradoxes of the developed society, Estonian cinema eagerly follows the challenges of modern times. Filmmaker Priit Pärn and producer Artur Talvik will give a short overview of modern visions in Estonian films.
