NATO's Secretary General Lord George Robertson to visit Estonia

On Thursday, 29 November, Secretary General of NATO Lord George Robertson will arrive in Estonia for a one-day visit.
On Lord Robertson's agenda are meetings with President Arnold Rüütel, Prime Minister Mart Laar, Minister of Foreign Affairs Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Minister of Defence Jüri Luik, Commander of the Defence Forces Rear Admiral Tarmo Kõuts as well as chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu Andres Tarand and deputy chairman of the National Defence Committee Trivimi Velliste.
The meetings will focus on Estonia's and NATO's co-operation and on Estonia's NATO membership activities plan (MAP) as well as many other issues connected with European security. After the meetings Lord George Robertson, Foreign Minister Ilves and Defence Minister Luik will also give a joint press conference at the press centre of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
George Robertson was born in Scotland in 1946. He has for years been active in the politics of both Scotland and the United Kingdom and he has also been the chairman of the Scottish labourists. In 1978-1999 Robertson was a Member of Parliament of the United Kingdom. In 1997 the UK Prime Minister Tony Blair appointed George Robertson Minister of Defence and in this capacity he also visited Estonia in February 1999, participating in the opening of the Baltic Defence College in Tartu. In August 1999 Lord Robertson was elected NATO Secretary General and in May 2000 he was on a visit to Estonia.
