Estonia and Thailand
Bilateral relations
Siam, as Thailand was then known, recognised Estonia on 22 September 1921 in connection with Estonia's acceptance to the League of Nations. The Kingdom of Thailand re-recognised the Republic of Estonia on 9 September 1991 and diplomatic relations were established on 27 April 1992.
Since 26 December 2008 Estonia’s ambassador accredited to the Kingdom of Thailand is Andres Unga, who resides in Beijing. The role of Estonian honorary consul general in Thailand has been filled by Dr. Virachai Techavichit since 19 February 1999. Estonia’s honorary consul in the Phuket region is Piyanoot Hongsyok.
The ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to Estonia resides in Stockholm. Ambassador Thanarat Thanaputti presented his credentials to President Toomas Hendrik Ilves on 27 May 2010.
On the basis of a representation agreement, Finland has represented Estonia for the issuing of visas in Thailand since 17 March 2008.
Visits and meetings
September 2005 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet and Thai Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai met in New York within the framework of the UN General Assembly;
March 2006 Thai Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Virachai Virameteekul in Tallinn;
September 2006 Prime Ministers Andrus Ansip and Thaksin Shinawatra met in Helsinki within the framework of the 6th ASEM summit;
May 2009 Foreign Ministers Urmas Paet and Kasit Piromya met in Hanoi within the framework of the ASEM foreign ministers’ meeting;
September 2010 Foreign Ministers Urmas Paet and Kasit Piromya met within the framework of the UN General Assembly;
October 2010 Prime Ministers Andrus Ansip and Abhisit Vejjajiva met in Brussels within the framework of the 8th ASEM summit;
June 2011 Foreign Minister Urmas Paet met with Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya in Gödöllö within the framework of the ASEM foreign ministers’ meeting.
Parliamentary co-operation
In April 2011 an Estonia-Thailand parliamentary group was created in Riigikogu, with Valdo Randpere as chairman and Reet Roos as vice-chairman.
Agreements
An agreement for co-operation in the extradition of inmates and the fulfilment of sentences between the Republic of Estonia and the Kingdom of Thailand is in effect; it was signed on 6 September 2000.
Consultations take place between the Estonian and Thai foreign ministries.
A co-operation agreement between the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Thailand was concluded on 10 September 2004.
