Bilateral relations
The Republic of Peru recognized Estonia with the admittance of Estonia into the League of Nations on 22.09.1921. Peru was among those most rapid to re-recognize Estonia’s independence, notifying of it on 6 September 1991.
Estonia and Peru established diplomatic relations on 27 July 1995,when the corresponding joint communiqué was undersigned in Stockholm. The first Peruvian Ambassador to Estonia Jose Emilio Romero Cevallos, who was residing in Stockholm, presented his credentials on 20 September 1996. Starting in October 2008 the ambassador was Felix C. Calderon, who resided in Helsinki, but in November 2009 the ambassador left and his responsibilities are now fulfilled by charges d’affaires ad interim Mrs. Mary Ann Silva de Espinosa.
The Peruvian Honorary Consulate is situated in Tartu. The Peruvian Honorary Consul is as of November 1998 Ricardo Elías Mateo Durand.
In April 2007 Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet met Peruvian Foreign Minister José Antonio García Belaúnde in Santo Domingo in the framework of European Union and Rio Group foreign ministers meeting.

No agreements have been concluded between Estonia and Peru.

Estonia’s trade with Peru has been modest.

In 2009 Peru was in 78th place among Estonia’s trade partners with a total trade turnover of 1.57 million EUR. Therefore turnover had decreased compared with the previous year, primarily on the account of export. In 2009 Estonia exported 83 thousand euros’ worth of goods to Peru, primarily mineral fuels but also plastic and paper goods. Import grew in comparison to 2008, totalling 1489 thousand euros. Estonian imports from Peru were primarily fish products, but also some textiles and precious stones and metals.
In 2008 Peru was in 82nd place among Estonia’s trade partners with turnover of 1.7 million EUR. Export from Estonia to Peru totalled 504 thousand EUR (91st place) and import from Peru to Estonia totalled 1.2 million euros (65th place).
